We start with organic flaxseed, grown north of the 53rd parallel. We then cold mill the flax for digestibility (bio-availability), using our own special flaking process that breaks up the seed, yet leaves the oil within the seed.

Special growing conditions, harvesting, handling, and cleaning procedures are utilized by our certified organic growers to ensure that the stock we receive is clean, pure and free of cracked or split seeds. Standard harvesting and handling procedures employed to produce the industrial oil crop are inadequate for the exacting specifications we require for Northern Edge® Milled Flaxseed. Only about 2% of Canada’s annual flaxseed crop is used for human consumption. 98% is grown for the industrial oil (coatings) industry.

Caution - Milled Flaxseed is the whole seed, milled to make its nutrients biologically available to the human digestive system; Flax Meal, like Soya Bean Meal, is the de-fatted portion of the seed that is a byproduct of oil production.

Caution: Not all Flaxseed contains Omega 3. Solin and Linola are two relatively new strains of flaxseed that have been genetically altered to reduce dramatically or eliminate the Omega 3 (ALA) content.

Bioavailability - Whole flaxseed is not digestible by humans. It only acts as a laxative. In fact, it moves so efficiently that after it passes through the digestive tract it can be planted and it will grow. Other than some of the mucilage on the outside of the seed, none of the nutrients are absorbed. Milled flaxseed is digestible - (biologically available) Northern Edge® is milled using a special slicing action, that does not crush or grind the seed, one package at a time.
